To Shape A Dragon's Breath: A DreamWorks Production

Image
I mean....it was aiiight. This book was good, but it didn't do much else than other books in the same genre. The characters were a bit of a stain between the actual story which wasn't the entire focus. It was indeed enjoyable but I'm going through a bit of a reading slump and pushed myself to finish this (as always) and didn't regret reading it. I recommend reading it but it's nothing outstanding. It's enough to entertain and keep you busy though. My overall rating is a 3.5/5. Belladonna: A Poisonous Life

Image
This book was good but not great. I can see a majority of people liking this book (which I did). But a lot of it dragged along and the plot line was weak and didn't entirely drive the story. I loved the scenes with Death and wish there were more. I think what mostly stalled this book was Signa "figuring out society". It just made the plot drag and feel like this book was comprised of 70% filler episodes. Overall my rating for this book is 2.5/5.  Extended Breakdown:  Characters: 2/5 Story: 2/5 Pace: 2/5 @wvbookwitch TikTok/Blog: https://linktr.ee/wvbookwitch

House of Hollow: Stranger Things

Image
Disappointed a little bit with how obvious everything was and how repetitive it all was. I enjoyed the prose and the oddness of it all. The first 100 pages made it seem like this was definitely my type of book. But after that it went downhill. I really wish it was more explained, in depth, and detailed background so that it would be more cohesive. Overall my rating for this book is 2/5. The Kiss Curse: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Image
For big fans of Gwyn and mainly the characters which drive this series, by all means pick it up. The writing is a bit choppy although charming. I enjoyed it while I read it but it didn't really offer anything new that The Ex Hex hadn't already. Alot of the plot felt recycled from the first book and I had to drag through it to keep going. Overall my rating is a 2.5/5. Extended Breakdown: Characters: 3/5 Story: 1/5 Pace: 2/5 TikTok: @wvbookwitch Blog: http://wvbookwitch.blogspot.com/

A Lesson In Vengeance: Who Murdered Who?

Image
We have a beautiful, dreamy, sapphic, and bewitching novel here. Concerning the mixed reviews I was nervous to start it but I respect others opinions on books and I try not to look at them but was excited for this one. This book actually exceeded my expectations by far with the lovers to enemies, murder, and the twists which I didn't see coming. The main character was relatable to me as someone who believes in magic and struggles with PTSD/anxiety. This for me was a 4.5/5. Definitely worth your time to read and a good spooky book for September - November. Where Darkness Blooms: They Always Watching

Image
First off, the concept was killer and I love oddities and this premise was an amazing start for me. I was hooked from the first bit, although the pacing really through this book off kilter. It was very repetitive in some parts and made the story drag in the pacing. This is a perfect cozy book for September/October spooky season if you have the time. It just could've been a bit shorter and conveyed the same story. My overall rating for this book is 3/5. Magissa: The Book of Magic

Image
First let's take a moment to appreciate that gorgeous cover! Now that that's over, let's get to the meat of this book. I really really enjoyed this book. This was a fantasy like many others I've read but the prose and the pacing bring out it's strengths extremely well. The pacing is what makes this story keep moving forward in an excitable way. I've found very few books that can do that so seemlessly and successfully. The characters were a bit mid but still likable. My overall rating for this book is 4/5. Spells For Forgetting: I Forgot

Image
That was a bit of a journey....but I can see that I'll be on the unpopular side of things. The writing was more disjointed than I would've liked, it wasn't very cohesive, and nothing much happened in the story it just dragged along. The murder mystery/thriller part I loved, when I knew what was going on. But the characters weren't enough to drive the story, I felt no connection to them and most of the time didn't know what their motives were. Overall my rating for this book is 2/5.  Extended Breakdown: Characters: 1/5 Story: 2.5/5 Pace: 2/5 TikTok: @wvbookwitch Blog: http://wvbookwitch.blogspot.com/

The Atlas Six: Groundhog Day

Image
I'm a little late to the bandwagon, but I get the hype. This book filled the joy and love I have for Umbrella Academy and learning. All the characters were literally in love with each other and I loved that. It caught me from the first chapter hook, line, and sinker. The thing that really brought the book down was how much repetitive explaining of the situation there was. It was oftentimes unnecessary and annoying. It made me want to skip ahead to the dialogue but then all I would find in the dialogue was bickering and complaining. Although, I loved each of the characters it became a little nonsensical with all that was going on and how repetitious it all was. The ending was the best part aside from the beginning in the twist that I had no idea what was coming next. It had me in complete disbelief. So with that my rating for this book is 3/5. The Glass Witch: Winter is Coming

Woah. That's the word that describes this book best. The Glass Witch by Sara Raztresen picked me up in a worlwind and dropped me into an icy wonderland full of mythology, wonder, and the unexpected. I was not ready for this adventure of a book to keep me up all night but it did. I finished it in one sitting and I'm so glad I did. Aveline was obviously my favorite, a badass that is vengeful and strong in their own right. It follows the bridal competition trope which I've regretfully read a lot of in my recent weeks and has therefore been a tad bit overplayed for my personal taste. But this did take a different approach to that trope and I loved it either way. Overall my rating for this book is 4.25/5. White as Witching: The Fairest of Them All

Image
We follow Snow in this perilous journey of seeing her family murdered before her eyes to being chosen for the selection. Of which five girls are chosen to live with the Queen. There are many familial secrets Snow will have to uncover, especially concerning her aunt, to survive the illusion. This is a wonderful Snow White retelling stemming from the many versions of her story. The characters were bewitching but not something that made me want to continue with the story. This was more of a story driven book which I adore. Overall it just seemed a little rushed. But then again this book is less than 270 pages and packs a punch for what story it does tell. Overall my rating for this is a 3.5/5.  Extended Breakdown: Characters: 3/5 Story: 4/5 Magic System: 3.5/5 TikTok: @wvbookwitch Blog: http://wvbookwitch.blogspot.com/

A Strange and Stubborn Endurance: Gay Forced Proximity Lovefest

Image
This was a treat of a slow burn, enemies to lovers, and triumph story. It has me blushing with the advances Cae and Velasin made as they grew together as partners. The story was more focused on the romance and world building than an actual story. Oftentimes the stakes felt very superficial and the twist and ending I could see from a mile away. From page 104 I could tell how the story would go and end. But, that is what I find good in a comfort story. This was still a very very good book and something I would read again. I treasure the characters above anything and each of their perspectives was intricate and adorable as ever. I just feel this story could have been told in 400 pages or less not 500+. Overall my rating for this book is a 4/5.  Extended Breakdown: Characters: 5/5 Story: 3.5/5 Pace: 3.5/5 TikTok: @wvbookwitch Blog: http://wvbookwitch.blogspot.com/
